Benard Munyange is a Kenyan based visual artist and Fine Art student at Kenyatta University. "My five senses inspire my work. What I see, hear, feel or think about is the picture I paint."

Munyange's artistic focus primarily centers on things that have life; figures, flora and fauna. He finds the human skin intriguing though he occasionally explores other textural subjects around him. Texture is his work described in one word; he wants viewers to feel the material almost like they could touch the emotion. His fascination with art began at the age of six after a human figure drawing amused the whole class. The assignment was to draw and label the parts of the body as was on the textbook. It turned out fine that everyone said there was no way he did it.

The Process:

Munyange works to imagine what his muse is thinking and convey that through the canvas.

When he is exhausted and feels like he is starting to ruin a piece, he takes a break. New perspective is always an important factor in the artistic process. Thus, he steps away from the canvas and to have a discussion with himself. He varies between critics and affirmations, creating balance between the two.

When he feels he’s at a finishing point, he looks at it and zones out for a while.

The Piece:

In a single word: Voices. 'Kamkutano' is slang for a monologue or a small (me, myself, and I) meeting where you sit down with yourself and realize you need to do better and things have to take a new turn. It's all about being conscious of the destructive things you have allowed.

Munyange wants the viewer to put themselves in the muse's shoes, feel like they've been there and they can relate.

The Theme:

The concept of having a meeting with yourself to discuss what you need to do better is consciousness at its core. It’s the self talk that we all have when we know things need to change.
