When we relaunched Osé back in March we opened with our one of a kind digital art exhibition The Year of the Fire Horse. Deeply rooted within the season’s theme of Rebirth, the exhibition featured up and coming Chinese artists and their modern interpretations of the Chinese Zodiac and more specifically the Year of the Fire Horse. . 

As we look back at the success of our first exhibition and the talented artists who joined us, we are excited to announce we will be joined by new artists for our exhibition entitled Consciousness, running on the site for all of the fall season (September 22nd – December 20th). 

This exhibition served as a launching point for the future exhibitions of Osé and thus we want to give you a chance to revisit some of the most popular pieces you may have missed from the exhibition. 

Huang Wang’s Galloping Discourse 

One of the favorites of the season, Huang Wang’s piece titled Galloping Discourse invites the viewer to reframe their understanding of the horse through the lens of agency, spectatorship and collective consciousness in society. It’s subversive, thought provoking and a beautiful reflection of the true nature of the horse. 

Huang Wang or Hétta as she is known focuses her work on the social value of art and women’s issues. Which is why we love her work and her message so much here at Osé. Her fully digital illustration managed to come alive on the canvas with each stroke, inviting you into the world that she has carefully crafted. 

Danli Ma’s Untitled Works 

Transforming the twelve animals from the zodiac into figures from traditional Chinese operas offered us a deeper look into Chinese culture as well as the creative bridge that Danli Ma created in her world. Originally portrayed as deities and demons, Danli Ma attributed a zodiac character to each of the famous operas blending culture and tradition alongside craft and beauty. 

Her fully digital works leap of the page and give the viewer insight into the regional differences between operas as well as a brief introduction to the story behind each character. 

Yu Lui & Lief’s Untitled Works 

In their series the duo explores the visual intersection between French objects and the twelve Chinese zodiac signs. Their whimsical and artful designs, their visual language allows two distinct and innately different cultures to interact in everyday objects, allowing the viewer to more intimately experience the charm of cultural exchange. 

Their bold use of red as a backdrop echoes the Spring festival’s color palette while offering culture context to the French based images. Overall, their works are playful, joyful and filled with a deeper message about cultural appreciation and collaboration to make an interesting visual expression. 

Li Xueer’s Series Take Off 

In the series of works, Li Xueer focuses on the traditional Chinese cultural artifact of the “Horse Treading on a Flying Swallow”. Referring to the speed in which a horse can reach is so fast it can step on a swallow’s back. In each digital painting you see the horse galloping alongside a swallow representing the traditional Chinese story. 

腾飞 or take off, is often used to metaphorically describe remarkable achievement by individuals and thus is the perfect word for the Year of the Fire Horse as it is filled with prosperity and good fortune. The paintings and stories vary in color and shade throughout the series reflecting the changing of light through a season. 

Xie Shiyi’s Untitled Work 

The stroke work in Xie Shiyi’s digital painting leaves the viewer in awe of the possibilities within digital art. In combining themes of renewal, movement and cultural story telling, Xie Shiyi created a piece that brings to life the spirit of the Spring season. 

The integration of the individual Chinese zodiac animal city symbolic and cultural elements of the year of the horse unfolds a story that is open to the interpretation of each person who views it.
